Children’s Art Competition – War Horse Unveiling and The Mane Event
To mark the War Horse statue unveiling and ‘The Mane Event’ we thought it would be fun to have an art competition and exhibition for children to acknowledge the importance of the horse.
War Horse Statue Unveiling
10,000 New Zealand horses were sent to World War One and only four came home. The War Horse statue is a memorial to those horses.
Memorial Park, 11.15 am, 11 November 2017
‘The Mane Event’
New Zealand’s most unique horse show created to celebrate our love of the horse. This is a FREE, ONE-OFF HORSE VARIETY SPECIAL with spectacular performances and displays.
Claudelands Events Centre, 1 pm – 4 pm, 11 November 2017
How to Enter the Competition
- Firstly, you must live in the Waikato region.
- There are four age groups you can enter in
- Five and six-year-olds
- Seven and eight-year-olds
- Nine and ten-year-olds and
- Eleven and twelve-year-olds
- The Theme
The theme is ‘what does the horse mean to you?’ You can choose to focus on the importance of the horse in history or culture or just express your love of the horse.
- Some Advice from Artist Matt Gauldie
Matt says horses are one of the hardest things to draw and it even took him a long time to be able to draw horses really well. He doesn’t want this to put you off trying to draw horses, though. It’s okay if your horses aren’t perfect.
Matt suggests that it’s good to focus on what the horse means to you and to think about how you feel about them. He loves horses, and thinks they are “sensitive” and “awesome”. He even calls the War Horse sculpture “the big, awesome war horse”.
Most importantly, Matt wants you to have fun doing your art and he’s really looking forward to seeing all your wonderful pictures.
Here’s artist Matt Gauldie who sculpted the War Horse statue. This is him in Afghanistan, where he helped children to paint a mural with a beautiful horse. He ‘s going to be the judge of the War Horse art competition.
