What a memorable week: first came the black polished concrete plinth (estimates 2.5-4 tonnes), then the seven tonne chunk of white stone gifted by the Turkish Government and the City of Canakkale, and mounted on the Victoria Street plinth median in the south end heritage precinct… supported on a concrete base with four metre deep…
Marking this year’s centenary of the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign, “The Line of Fire” is the work of current Defence artist Captain (Hon) Matt Gauldie. It is being gifted by TOTI Trust from public fund-raising, donations and sponsorship. The memorial plaque at the Founders Theatre in Hamilton marking the 50th anniversary of the March 20, 1963 sell-out performance there by legendary American jazz artist Louis Armstrong was unveiled exactly half a century later.
